Valmiera Region is well known in Latvia and Europe because of its cultural traditions and events. One of the main objectives of Valmiera is to facilitate cultural life and to revive ancient Latvian traditions.
Valmiera Region was the first place where gatherings of Latvian choirs began, and thus started the popular tradition of song festivals. The centre of Valmiera’s music life is the
Music School that was founded in 1920. It was the first music school outside the capital.
The art gallery “Laipa” in cooperation with the Latvian Artists Association, Museum of Foreign Arts and other institutions, organizes exhibitions of artists from Valmiera, Latvia and also from abroad. Valmiera museum offers a wide range of service – exhibitions, conferences, excursions, lectures and educational programs about history, traditions and culture of Latvia and Valmiera.
Valmiera Drama theatre has developed into the region’s professional arts centre. In 2004 the theatre celebrated its 85 anniversary. The theatre troop has visited many places, including the USA, Canada, Sweden, Russia, Estonia and others. Valmiera Drama theatre has won a rank among leading professional drama theatres in Latvia. The theatre is tje only professional performance theatre in Vidzeme. It operates since 1919 and after the reconstruction 1990s of last century its building is one the most advanced in Latvia. Viewers from all araound Latvia and have become attached to this theatre and it has started to acknowledge itself on an international scale.
The annual events' calendar in Valmiera is full of various acitivities in sports, culture, education and recreation. The most famous are: The Gauja river festival, The President’s Cup, Simjuda Ancient Market Days, Midsummer festival and Festival of Winter Music.
