13th Baltic International Summer School opens on 1st of August

13th Baltic International Summer School (BISS) opens on Monday, 1st of August in Valmiera, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. During two weeks of BISS two programmes will take place with 70 participants from 20 countries.

One of the programmes is Erasmus Intensive Programme „Environment Awareness. Communication. Interpretation” supported by the Lifelong Learning Programme of European Union. During two weeks various classes are planned at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences as well as study trips to the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, the Gauja National Park and the Gaiziņkalns Nature Park. The programme will include issues of nature protection, sustainable business and environment communication, as well as case studies of sustainability in tourism and hospitality. 40 students and 17 lecturers from Latvia, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America will take part in this programme.

The second programme „Learn and Experience Baltics: Nature, Culture and Spa Tourism” is organized in cooperation with Pärnu College, University of Tartu, Estonia. During this programme one week will be spent in Latvia and other one – in Estonia. From the 31st of July till the 4th of August and from the 11th till the 13th of August the programme will be provided in Latvia by Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. From the 4th till the 10th of August participants’ activities in Estonia will be maintained by Pärnu College, University of Tartu. During the programme students will have lectures on nature, culture and spa tourism in the Baltics. The lectures will be combined with various study trips. The programme has 30 participants from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Georgia, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine.

Rector of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences Dr.hist. Vija Daukšte points out, that the number of summer school participants is record high in comparison with other years, which is indicator of the summer school’s quality as well as additional responsibility. The summer school’s theme dedicated to the environmental issues matches with the university’s efforts of environmentally friendly performance – in 2011 Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences achieved the Green Point Challenge Cup as the greenest university of Latvia.
